Chitkara University, School of Maritime Studies, conducts four modular courses at its campus. These courses are mandatory under the overall guidelines of IMO and the current requirements of STCW 2010 for anyone who wishes to undertake a seafaring career.
As Per DGS Circular 6 of 2018, Four STCW Basic courses are now combined as a Single course “Basic STCW Safety Training Course (BST)”.
The aim of this course is to give Seafarers the essential education and training in Personal Survival Techniques, Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting, Elementary First Aid and Personal Safety & Social Responsibilities.
BST Modular Course – Duration 12 days
- Elementary First Aid: Duration 2-1/2 days.
- Personal Survival Techniques: Duration 2-1/2 days.
- Personal Safety and Social Responsibility: Duration 4 days.
- Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting: Duration 3 days.

Course Information
Elementary First Aid +
This course aims at training the candidates to provide elementary first aid on board ship, in accordance with table A –VI/1-3 of the STCW code, as amended.
The course covers the requirements of the 1995 STCW Convention as amended and TEAP Manual. On meeting the minimum standard of competence in EFA, a trainee will be competent to take immediate action upon encountering an accident or medical emergency until the arrival of a person with medical first aid skills of the person in charge of medical care on board.

Proficiency in Survival Techniques +
This course aims to meet the mandatory minimum requirements for seafarers for familiarization, basic safety training & instruction in accordance with Table A-VI/1-1 of STCW code , as amended.This syllabus covers the requirements for the 1995 STCW convention as amended and TEAP Manual. On meeting the minimum standard of competency in Personal Survival Techniques a candidate will be able to perform techniques for his own personal safety and of the ship.

Personal Safety and Social Responsibilities +
This course provides familiarization, basic safety training and instruction for safe working procedures and social responsibilities on board ships in accordance with Table A-VI/1-4 of STCW code , as amended.This syllabus covers the requirements for the 1995 STCW convention as amended and TEAP Manual. On successfully completing this course and meeting the required performance standards candidate will be able to identify the potential areas of emergencies that may arise in the marine environment, thereby taking effective steps to observe “Safe working practices”, to eliminate personal injuries and accidents. It will help to create a conducive atmosphere designed to boost human/social relationships amongst shipmates.

Fire Prevention & Fire Fighting +
This model course aims to provide the training for candidates in fire prevention & fire fighting in accordance with Table A –VI/1-2 of the STCW code, as amended.This syllabus covers the requirements for the 1995 STCW convention as amended and TEAP Manual. On completion of the course as per guidelines the candidate will be competent to take appropriate measures for the safety of personal & of the ship in case of fire and to use fire appliances correctly. The candidates will also have knowledge of fire prevention.
